Your donations will ensure that we don't have to say
" We are full and unable to take in kittens or cats at this time"

When you come to the shelter, our knowledgeable Adoption Counselors will talk with you about your cat knowledge and experience as well as your other pets and match you with the cat that is perfect for your home and lifestyle. Once your application is approved, you can pick up your new BFF.
We do not do same-day adoptions or adopt outside of the Tri-Cities and RVA area.

If you apply online, your application will be reviewed, and you will be contacted via email or phone.

Some adult cats may be adopted singly, but we recommend adopting out kittens and young cats in pairs unless you have a playful cat or dog already in residence to keep the kitten company. Some of our cats are "bonded" with another cat, which means they must be adopted together.

Please read " Why cats and especially kittens should be adopted in pairs " at the bottom of this page.

As of October 1, 2021: Hopewell Humane Society asks for a $120.00 non-refundable adoption fee to adopt a cat 6 years and younger. We have a $40.00 non-refundable adoption fee to adopt a cat 7 years.

The fee includes:

  •   A cat that has been to a vet and tested for FELV/FIV. They are not put up for adoption unless the tests are negative.

  • An adult cat that is up-to-date on vaccinations before being made available for adoption. (Kittens will have had vaccinations appropriate for their age)

  • Cats and kittens are spayed or neutered before they are placed for adoption. Kittens are spayed/neutered at around 16 weeks and are then available for adoption.

  • Post-adoption support: our volunteers are very knowledgeable about cat care. We encourage adopters to email us with any questions.

At Hopewell Humane Society, we are looking for "Forever Homes" for our cherished cats and kittens, not "just until." We, therefore, carry out a stringent background check on all our applications and strive to make the best match for our cats. We do not adopt cats out as "gifts" and ask that everyone who will live with the cat(s) meets with them during the adoption process.

Please complete our online adoption application for our review.
Since we are volunteers
, please be patient in waiting for a response to your application; our background check can take several days. Please come and visit with the cats you are interested in during our open adoption hours!

Why cats and especially kittens should be adopted in pairs:

Hey there, future cat parent! We're so excited you're considering opening your heart and home to some of our wonderful kitties.

You know how much fun it is to hang out with your friends? Well, our cats feel the same way! They've grown up at the shelter with many other feline buddies. They spend their days playing chase, grooming each other, and just generally being cat besties.

Because they're so used to having constant companionship, bringing just one of our cats home might make them a little lonely. They're used to having a built-in playmate for those zoomies and cuddle puddles.

Of course, every cat is an individual, and with lots of love and attention from you, a single cat can thrive! However, if you're looking to bring a cat into a home where they might be alone for more extended periods, or if you want to double the fun and the purrs, we always encourage considering adopting a pair. They'll keep each other entertained and happy, and you'll get to witness twice the adorable antics!

Think about it – two furry friends bringing double the love and laughter into your life! We're happy to help you find a purrfect pair and would love to continue their adventures together in your home. What do you think?
