About Adopting More Than One Cat

Some adult cats are happiest as the only cat in the home. However, kittens and young cats often do best when adopted in pairs, unless there is already a playful cat or dog at home to keep them company.

Certain cats are considered bonded pairs, meaning they share a close connection and must be adopted together.

Why Kittens (and Some Cats) Do Best in Pairs

Many of our cats—especially kittens and young cats—have grown up surrounded by other cats at the shelter. They spend their days playing, grooming, and learning important social skills together.

Because of this constant companionship, kittens and young cats often adjust best when adopted with a feline friend. Having a playmate helps prevent loneliness, reduces stress, and provides healthy outlets for energy through play and interaction.

Every cat is an individual, and some adult cats are perfectly content being the only cat in a home. However, for kittens and highly social cats—particularly in households where people may be away during the day—adopting a pair can lead to happier, more confident cats.

Adopting two cats means they can keep each other company, burn off energy together, and continue the bond they’ve already formed. And for adopters, it often means twice the companionship, comfort, and joy.

Our adoption team is happy to help you determine whether a bonded pair or a single cat is the best fit for your home and lifestyle.
